Case Studies

Here are some case studies of a selection of valves installed by our team.

WaStop WS1485-S3-304-FL  Warrington

Overview

To protect residential and commercial properties in Warrington from repeated flooding caused by river backflow. A robust inline check valve was installed in a large river outfall. The historic flooding was traced to river surge re-entering the drainage network via the outfall.

Challenge
    •    River backflow during high water events
    •    Large-diameter outfall with debris potential
    •    Need for full-bore forward discharge
    •    Limited access and minimal structural works

Solution

A WaStop DN1500 Inline Check Valve by Wapro was installed at the outlet.

Installation

The valve was fitted using a flange fitting fixation, securing the valve to the head wall. This method ensured:
    •    A secure backflow-resistant installation
    •    Minimal civil works at the riverbank
    •    Rapid installation with a flange fitting.

Outcome
    •    Successful prevention of river backflow during high-water events
    •    Protection achieved for nearby homes and           businesses
    •    Full discharge capacity maintained without restriction
    •    Reduced operational and maintenance costs

This retrofit demonstrates how WaStop inline check valves - with flange fixation - provide effective, low maintenance flood protection for large outfalls without major infrastructure changes.

WaStop WS590-FL  Abram

Overview

To protect a remote pumping station from backflow surges, which were identified using historic data from flow level alarms. A flap valve was already fitted and despite being less than 3 years old, was already failing.

Challenge
    •    River backflow during high water events
    •    Outlet located on river bend
    •    Remote location
    •    Outlet was fully submerged

Solution

A WaStop WS590-FL Inline Check Valve by Wapro was installed at the outlet.

Installation

The valve was fitted using a flange fitting fixation, securing the valve to the head wall. This method ensured:
    •    A secure backflow-resistant installation
    •    Minimal civil works at the riverbank
    •    Rapid installation with a flange fitting.

Outcome
    •    Successful prevention of river backflow during     high-water events
    •    Protection achieved for vital infrastructure
    •    Full discharge capacity maintained without restriction
    •    Reduced operational and maintenance costs

This job once again showcases the teams ability to safely build an improvised dam, allowing a safe working area giving full access to the outlet.

Penstock Replacement    Brentford

Overview

A failed penstock valve within an interceptor tank at a busy metal recycling facility required urgent replacement to restore effective flow control and environmental protection.

The interceptor tank forms a critical part of the site’s drainage system, capturing contaminated runoff before discharge. The existing penstock had deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to aggressive wastewater and debris associated with recycling operations, resulting in loss of sealing capability and inability to regulate flows.

Challenge
    •    Site still in operational state
    •    Historical high gas readings (H2S)
    •    Several failed attempts by another company

  • Site still in operational state
  • Historical high gas readings (H2S)
  • Multiple partners working together
  • Several failed attempts by another company

Solution

Using our technical knowledge we ensured that the right equipment was availaible on site at the right time. Our client had sourced a suitable replacement valve.

Installation

The chamber was drained out and jetted clean by "Sweeptech Environmental Services" which enabled a cleaner, safer working environment.

The old Penstock was removed and suitably disposed of. The new Penstock was installed, tested and signed off to the manufacturers specification.

Outcome
The replacement of the failed penstock valve successfully restored full control and reliability to the interceptor tank system on site.

Key outcomes included:

  • Restored flow control: The new penstock provides reliable isolation and regulation of flows within the interceptor tank.
  • Improved environmental protection: Effective sealing prevents uncontrolled discharge of contaminated runoff, supporting regulatory compliance.
  • Increased operational resilience: The site can now safely manage storm events and maintenance activities without risk of surcharge or overflow.
  • Reduced maintenance requirements: The corrosion-resistant construction ensures long-term durability in a harsh industrial environment.
  • Enhanced site safety: Reliable isolation improves conditions for future inspection and maintenance works.

Overall, the upgrade delivered a robust, long-term solution, ensuring the interceptor system can operate efficiently while protecting both the site and surrounding environment.
